There is no single average ejaculate volume that applies to every man on every collection.
What is published is a lower reference limit, from two editions of the same manual, and a commonly cited band above it.
The World Health Organization's 2021 laboratory manual for examining human semen (its 6th edition) sets the lower reference limit for ejaculate volume at 1.4 mL. That figure is the 5th percentile of a reference population of men whose partners had a recent, time-to-pregnancy confirmed conception: 95% of that population produced at least 1.4 mL.
The prior, 2010 edition of the same manual (5th edition) set that same lower limit at 1.5 mL. The number moved by a tenth of a milliliter between editions; it did not change what the number means.
Above either floor, the range MedlinePlus's semen-analysis entry gives for a normal ejaculate is about 1.5 to 5 mL ("the normal volume varies from 1.5 to 5.0 milliliter per ejaculation"). That is a description of where most samples fall, not a diagnostic cutoff in either direction: a reading above 5 mL is not flagged as abnormally high by either WHO edition.
A 5th-percentile cutoff answers one question: is this reading unusual enough, in a fertility-tested population, to be worth a second look. It does not rank men against each other, and it is not a number a man is trying to "beat."

How a laboratory actually measures volume: by weight, not by eye or a pipette
A semen analysis does not measure volume by reading a mark on a cup or by drawing the sample up into a pipette.
The standard method is to weigh the collection container before and after the sample is added, then convert the weight difference to a volume using the fluid's density, which sits close to 1 gram per milliliter.
This is a methods point, not a trivia point: two numbers are only comparable when they were measured the same way. A lab figure and a kitchen-counter guess are not that.
What moves the reading within one man: abstinence, age, an incomplete collection, and recent frequency
The same man can produce different readings on different days, and a single low result is rarely the end of the story.
The WHO manual specifies this abstinence window before a semen analysis is collected. A shorter or much longer window than what was actually used is a reason to ask when a lab repeats a low result, since it changes the baseline the reference range assumes.
Several cohort studies report volume trending lower with age. It is one of several parameters studied this way, alongside motility and morphology.
Ejaculation happens in fractions, and the first portion released carries the prostate-rich component. A collection that misses that first fraction, whether from spillage or timing, under-reports the true volume and is a common, correctable reason for one low reading.
Ejaculation frequency in the days before a collection works against volume: more frequent ejaculation in that window tends to leave less fluid available for the next sample, independent of anything the abstinence-window instruction is meant to control for.

What "low" means clinically: hypospermia, and the three lines a urologist reads with it
A single reading under the reference limit has a name: hypospermia. It is a laboratory description, not automatically a diagnosis of a problem, and it is the volume line read on its own.
What a urologist adds to that one number is a short checklist read from the same report, because volume alone rarely points anywhere specific:
The three-line criterion
- Low volume: under the WHO reference limit on a properly timed, complete collection.
- pH under 7.2: the WHO threshold is 7.2, a marker of how alkaline the sample is.
- Absent or very low fructose: a sugar contributed almost entirely by the seminal vesicles.
What that combination points toward
- Together, this pattern points toward a seminal-vesicle problem: obstruction of the ducts that carry seminal-vesicle fluid, or, less commonly, the vesicles being absent.
- Any one of the three lines alone does not support that conclusion; it is the combination a clinician is checking for.
- Retrograde ejaculation, where semen enters the bladder instead of exiting, is a separate low-volume cause a clinician rules out with its own test.
The reason the seminal vesicles matter here is structural: they contribute most of an ejaculate's fluid volume and nearly all of its fructose. A report that is low on both, with an acidic pH, is describing that plumbing, not a performance issue.
Volume is not count: total sperm number is concentration times volume
The volume line and the fertility outcome most people actually care about, sperm count, are two different measurements on the same report, connected by one multiplication.
Total sperm number = sperm concentration (million per mL) × ejaculate volume (mL)
The definitional relationship a semen analysis report is built onSperm cells themselves are a small share of that fluid. Healthline's review of this category notes that only about 10% of semen is made up of sperm; the rest is fluid contributed mainly by the seminal vesicles and prostate.
Because the total depends on both numbers, a report can show any of four combinations, and only two of them describe the same thing in plain language:
- Normal volume, low concentration: a low sperm count spread through a normal amount of fluid.
- Low volume, normal concentration: a normal sperm count carried in less fluid than the reference range expects.
Reading only the volume line and skipping concentration, or the reverse, misses which of those two very different findings is actually on the page.

Where volume-marketed supplements fit: one trial's 20% responder analysis
Once a man has his own numbers, a marketed supplement is where the questions usually turn next, and one real, published trial is worth reading in this same reference-number frame rather than by the ad copy around it.
A two-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 63 men, run by the contract research firm Vedic Lifesciences on behalf of the supplement Semenax, reported that a higher proportion of men on the active product than on placebo showed a 20% or more increase in ejaculate volume, and the active group scored better on the investigator's and patient's global assessments.
What that finding is, specifically, is a responder analysis: the share of men clearing a 20% relative rise, not an average-volume comparison. Independent summaries of the same trial note its primary endpoint, the average change in semen parameters between groups, did not reach statistical significance.
That distinction, a passed responder threshold against a null primary endpoint, is the kind of fine print a milliliter number on its own does not show you.
