Where the fluid comes from: this is a gland question, not a sperm question
Most of what leaves the body at ejaculation was never sperm to begin with.
Sperm cells, made in the testes, make up under 10% of the fluid by volume. The rest is seminal plasma, and that plasma comes overwhelmingly from two glands: the seminal vesicles and the prostate.

Read that table again: the two glands that decide most of the total, the seminal vesicles and the prostate, are not where sperm is made. So a lever that only raises sperm count, without touching what those two glands secrete, would not be expected to move the number on this page much at all.
That single fact reframes almost everything below. A trial that reports "improved sperm parameters" is very often a trial about count and motility, not about volume, and the two are not the same claim.

The abstinence interval is the biggest single lever you actually control
If one variable in this entire page has the most consistent evidence behind it, it is this one, and it is also the one that costs nothing.
The World Health Organization's laboratory manual asks for 2 to 7 days of ejaculatory abstinence before a semen sample is collected for analysis. That window is not arbitrary. It exists because volume and sperm count are abstinence-dependent: a sample collected after one day is systematically different from one collected after five, which is exactly why labs standardize the interval before comparing results at all.
Within that window, volume tends to climb across the first several days and the gain per additional day shrinks as the interval lengthens, though the exact plateau point varies by study. Separately, more recent IVF-focused research has favored shorter intervals for sperm DNA integrity, a reminder that "more abstinence" does not help every measure at once, even though it tends to help this one.
The criterion for a fair self-comparison follows: compare your own samples only at the same interval and the same time of day. Testing once after two days and once after six, then reading the difference as a result, measures the abstinence window, not anything else.

Hydration is a ceiling, not a lever
Seminal plasma is mostly water, carrying the fructose, proteins and minerals the seminal vesicles and prostate contribute. So it is reasonable to expect that dehydration, which lowers bodily secretions generally, could lower ejaculate volume too.
What is not supported is the next step people take: that drinking extra water on top of normal hydration adds volume. Nothing in our research turned up such a trial. Hydration looks like a ceiling dehydration can lower, not a lever extra water can raise past normal.
The one measurement worth taking: urine color, not ounces. Light straw to pale yellow is the standard clinical marker of adequate hydration; darker urine suggests topping up, and colorless urine for long stretches can mean over-hydration.

Medications and conditions that lower volume, and when that is a doctor's question
Some of the biggest drops in ejaculate volume are not lifestyle questions at all. They are drug-class effects, or a disease process, and both are worth naming plainly.
Used for hair loss (1 mg) or an enlarged prostate (5 mg). A 48-week trial found the 1 mg dose did not significantly change semen production in young men; a separate one-year trial in healthy men (Amory et al., J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2007, PMID 17299062) found semen volume down 29.7% on dutasteride 0.5 mg (statistically significant) and 14.5% on finasteride 5 mg (not significant) at 52 weeks.
In a 5-day, randomized, three-way crossover in 48 healthy men, tamsulosin 0.8 mg (double the usual clinical dose) cut ejaculate volume by a mean 2.4 mL while alfuzosin and placebo rose 0.3 to 0.4 mL; 89.6% of men had a volume drop over 20% and 35.4% produced no ejaculate at all, an effect the authors did not attribute to retrograde ejaculation (Hellstrom and Sikka, J Urol 2006, PMID 16952675). The same crossover's sperm report found total sperm count fell 54.6 million on tamsulosin while rising on placebo and alfuzosin (J Androl 2009, PMID 19201696).
Chronic high blood sugar can damage the nerves that keep the bladder neck closed during ejaculation, sending semen backward into the bladder. One controlled study found this in roughly a third of men with diabetes, versus none of the matched controls.
Two criteria, either one is enough
- A persistent reading under the WHO's 1.4 mL lower reference limit, confirmed on more than one sample at a standard 2 to 7 day interval, not a single low reading after a short abstinence window.
- A sudden drop from your own normal, especially alongside a new medication, cloudy urine after sex (a sign worth mentioning, and one that can point toward retrograde flow), or any pain.

Ingredients with actual trials, ranked by whether they even measured volume

Read row by row and a pattern appears: the largest, best-designed trial here (zinc, 2,370 men) measured volume directly and found a difference of exactly zero. The trial that did find a volume increase was a multi-ingredient product, not one ingredient in isolation. The single-ingredient volume trial was small and unreplicated, and one common label ingredient has no dedicated trial at all.
None of that means these ingredients do nothing. It means the honest claim is narrower than "this ingredient increases ejaculate volume," and a label citing a study should be read for exactly which of these four boxes that study ticked.

A two-month self-test protocol, if you want an actual answer for your own body
Everything above is population-level evidence. The only way to know what moves your own number is a small, controlled personal test, and two months is not an arbitrary length: it roughly matches the turnover time physiologists give for a full cycle of sperm production and gland secretion.
Fix the interval
Pick a number inside the WHO's 2 to 7 day window and keep it identical for every sample across the two months. Changing the interval between tests invalidates the comparison before anything else does.
Fix the time of day
Collect at the same time each round. Secretions can vary across the day, and this is a free source of noise a fixed schedule removes entirely.
Change one variable at a time
A hydration habit, one ingredient, one medication review with a doctor. Two variables changed together means neither one gets credit or blame for whatever the second test shows.
Get a real clinical semen analysis, before and after
This is the only objective measurement on this page. Labs typically measure volume gravimetrically, by weighing the collection container before and after, using a semen density close to 1 gram per mL, because pouring or pipetting a sample into a graduated cylinder is known to underestimate its true volume.
Two-month framing reflects general physiology for spermatogenesis and gland-secretion turnover, not a single named trial. Gravimetric measurement and the roughly 1 g per mL density figure per published semen-density and volume-measurement research, and per findings that decanting or pipetting underestimates ejaculate volume compared with weighing.
What the volume-supplement category claims, and what its one placebo-controlled trial actually measured
Search "how to increase ejaculate volume" and the advertising register shows up fast: dramatic before-and-after language, a "clinically proven" badge, and testimonials describing results the underlying study never claimed to produce.
Behind at least one such product sits a real trial: a two-month, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 63 men. Its honest headline is narrower than its ad copy. More men on the active product than on placebo showed a 20% or larger rise in ejaculate volume, a responder analysis, and global-assessment scores favored the product too. But the trial's primary endpoint, the average change in semen parameters across the group, did not reach statistical significance. The study also dosed twice the product's own daily label serving, so replicating the trial's protocol costs roughly double the sticker price.
A responder finding is a real signal, not the same as a proven average effect
- "Clinically proven" on an ad almost never specifies which endpoint proved it. A responder analysis (a threshold percentage of people who improved) and a primary-endpoint result (the average change across everyone) are two different claims, and only one of them is usually the one that failed.
- A trial's studied dose and a bottle's labeled daily serving are not guaranteed to match. When they do not, running the actual trial protocol can cost multiples of the advertised monthly price.
- None of this means the category is fraudulent. It means the marketing register and the study's own fine print are two different documents, and only one of them is written to be read carefully.

How many days of abstinence give the highest ejaculate volume?
There is no single universal number. The WHO's laboratory manual asks for 2 to 7 days of abstinence before a semen analysis because volume is abstinence-dependent within that window, generally higher toward the far end, though exactly where it plateaus varies by study. What is fair is comparing a man's own samples only at the same interval and time of day; comparing a 2-day sample to a 6-day sample and calling the difference a result is not a real comparison.
